The awesome Mount Vesuvius still looms over the the ruins of ancient Pompeii. While the volcano is still active, the region has not seen another eruption as powerful as the one which buried this thriving city in 79 AD. The dilemma is that this volcanic activity makes the soil of the area so appropriate for growing vines and other agricutltural products. This soil fertility is certainly one of the major reasons that this ancient city flourished. You might say that living in the shadow of an active Volcano could drive one to drink. Within the ruins, one finds much evidence that wine consumption was a frequent part of daily life in Pompeii.
