Modern Reflections of History In Campania and Basilicata these ancient grape varietals are still alive and well and many of the traditions of the region are steeped in history. However, with the world market paying more attention to these wonderful wine, modernization is becoming more and more common. The town of Barile is the center of production for Aglianico del Vulture, one of the regions finest red wines. Barile sits at the foot of Mount Vulture, a dormant volcano. The cellars and winemaking facilities (pictured left) are carved into the side of the old volcanic flow. In many of the cellars, you can actually see the direction the lava was flowing. While the grapes and the hillside remain ancient, more and more of these cellars are being updated with temperature controlled fermentation tanks, new French barrels and other modern equipment. As a result, the wines of the region are shooting stars on the way to their former Roman reputation and glory. |
